You could state with certainty that Jim Hodges was a natural - born entrepreneur. His first business venture was, Hodges Ditch Cleaning Contractors, dreamed up, and carried to success at age 9 - right along side of his mallard duck raising, egg selling, and crop garden sales to neighbors, and friends ! . There's been a whole lot more since that early jaunt, way back in the 1950's.

Jim's battery of topics on business is as vast as his experiences. From rising to the top of the corporate ladder, all the way down to losing it all. Jim enjoys helping others avoid the mine fields before it's too late, and they find out the hard way.

Article for Inventors, by Jim Hodges

Be Not Discouraged : To be an inventor, you must think innovatively, and persevere the hardships of the game, namely - getting your ideas stolen left, and right. You might find out the hard way, just as I did, that there is no Patent Police! YOU must defend your idea, or invention, with your money, but also cunning strategies. Even if you win in court initially, there are always appeals that can drag on for years. You may run out of money to continue the fight. Some get discouraged with this, but it is the ultimate gauge of the value of your ideas. If a corporate giant runs off with your idea, or invention, you know it has value, and - they thought enough of it to take it. It took me a while, and a lot of antacids to get a grip on that philosophy !

My lucky break came during the pepper spray market explosion that started in the late 1970's. I hit the market timing just right with variations of some formulas I designed, that not only became popular, but profitable as well. I designed, and patented the first, and only tactical holster ever made for the police duty belt, and called it, the Full Safety Holster.  I later worked on the first decontamination formula for pepper spray exposure, and called it, Sudecon. To round out the market, I authored the first law enforcement, security, military, corrections, and civilian training programs to include combined tactics, and called it, Direct Defense. I rode that high wave from Texas to Las Vegas, and then - the rest of the world for many years.

The Full Safety Holster is offered in leather, and nylon, and many styles including basket - weave, flat black, and clarino.

Where do great innovations come from ? Are they all products of high science, and precise calculations ? Let's see :

Sudecon is a formula that works on a complex problem ( Human exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum, aka Pepper Spray ), with simple ingredients. Over 6,000 years ago the Bushido knew the secret to the formula, all I had to do was follow the bouncing ball through history to the turn of the 20th Century. The complex problem with pepper spray is that it is an oleoresin, and is not water soluble as tear gas is. In plain terms, it is like butter on the skin, and in the hair. Flushing with water only offers temporary relief from the hot burning sensation, and just moves the oleoresin to other parts of the body. The pepper spray formula can linger, and still burn for up to 72 hours - essentially, and recurrently, each time the pores are open. What to do ... what to do ? ....
